The Cornell Scheduling Team, led by Professor David Shmoys, was founded to tackle the challenges of academic scheduling at Cornell University. Using advanced mathematical modeling and an optimization framework based on mixed-integer programming (MIP), our team creates conflict-free schedules that enhance academic efficiency and reduce stress for students and faculty. What began as a small research project has grown into a collaborative effort that leverages cutting-edge algorithms and real-world data to develop balanced, fair schedules tailored to Cornell’s unique needs. We continuously refine our approach to provide resilient, adaptable scheduling solutions for the Cornell community.

Check out our latest research paper, which was submitted to INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics, to better understand how we create our final schedules.
This semester, exams were scheduled across 24 time slots over 9 days, with larger classes getting priority in earlier slots.
